Reknown for enjoying chasing the leader down, starting in the penultimate group suited Cam Smith in the final round of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews on Sunday.
A steady front nine score of 2-under par set Cam up for a stunning 6-under back nine to win the Claret Jug from fast finishing American Cameron Young. Rory McIlroy’s rather sedate 1-under back nine resulted in 3rd place.
As most would know, 28 year old Cam Smith grew up playing golf at SBG Golf’s Wantima Country Club at Brendale. Cam has been a champion golfer in our region since he first came on the scene as a talented junior golfer. Cam won our District Junior Championship back to back in 2008 and 2009. Even at that time, Cam’s long-standing coach, Grant Field (Pelican Waters GC) declared that Cam would reach the top of the professional golf.
From all at SBG Golf, congratulations to Cam and your entire team including Des and your supportive family.
